REPLACING THE SUMP GASKET

One task that I needed to carry out was reducing the oil leaks from the engine. First area was the sump gasket and fortunately it is possible to remove the sump in the Riley without removing the engine.

Follow the instructions in the manual including lifting the rear of the gearbox and hence the engine to allow the rear of the sump to disengage.

The sump is out, the baffle plate was removed and has been thoroughly cleaned. There was very little "muck" in the bottom of the sump. Old gasket goo has been carefully removed with solvents and careful scraping.

Sump cleaned up and ready to fit the gasket.
The supplied gasket (below) may have been OK but I preferred to use a neoprene cork gasket here.
It was rather annoying that I could not purchase a piece of neoprene cork big enough to make the gasket in one piece. So I had to resort to making a dovetail joint similar to the original to make the gasket.

I used the original gasket as a template to make the new piece on the left below.

Blue Hylomar (pressure pack) was used to coat the surface between the sump and the cork gasket. I didn't use any sealant on the side facing the block.
Time will tell whether that leaks but at least I should be able to replace the sump if needed. (So far so good).

I have fitted a Hi Torque starter motor in my RME from "The Engine Centre" 1195 Bunyip River Rd, GARFIELD Victoria 3814

I dealt with Graham 03 5629 2676 (0411 364 463) approx $255 from memory.
I asked Graham to keep a record of the details in case any other Riley owners wanted one.
It turns out to be the same spec as the one I have had fitted to my Triumph TR3A for many years.

The exhaust work was done by Paul at Eden Radiator & Exhaust 77 Prices Hwy Eden 02 6496 1973

I will need to fit an additional expansion box as it is a bit noisy. The muffler shown is the S/S repro from the Sydney Riley club.

I am sure some of the noise is drumming coming from the pressed metal base under the rear seat shown by the red cross above. I accidentally left the seat base out of place when I removed the passenger seat to have the uphosltery modified and the car was very much noisier. At the moment I can't get "DYNAMAT" locally so will have to order some in and fit it around the floor areas.

While the front seats are out for repair to the seat squabs, I can work on soundproofing the rear seat. REPORT WHEN TESTED.
Lots of work needed here:- carpets, door trims, seat belts etc.
